Decoding the Distinction: Eternity Rings vs. Infinity Rings

What are Eternity Rings?

An eternity ring features diamonds encircling the entire band, representing unending love and commitment. Typically, it complements an engagement and wedding ring, given years into a relationship or to mark a significant anniversary.

Compared to traditional rings, the diamond eternity ring is relatively new, originating in the 1960s by the British diamond company De Beers, famous for popularizing diamond engagement rings in the 1930s. To utilize their extensive stock of small diamonds, De Beers designed the eternity ring, targeting married women with campaigns encouraging husbands to convey their financial progress.

Though diamond engagement rings may include pavé stones around the band, they aren’t quite the same as infinity rings. The head securing the central diamond interrupts the full circle of stones, differentiating them from true eternity rings.

Regarding the order of wear, tradition places the wedding ring first on the left hand’s ring finger, closest to the heart. If opting to wear all rings on one finger, the wedding ring is followed by the engagement ring, and then the eternity ring.

What are Infinity Rings?

Sharing a similar significance of eternal love, the infinity ring stands apart by incorporating the infinity sign or figure 8 within its design instead of a continuous circle of diamonds.

The infinity symbol’s inclusion varies: Some rings display it where a center diamond would sit, others integrate it into the band, and rings with twisting patterns may also be considered infinity rings.

Pricing varies with the chosen infinity ring style and whether it includes a central stone; some may be simple silver bands shaped like a figure 8, while others are more elaborate.
